Translation tools

Translating Claroline into your language or adapting the official translation to your specific needs is a common need. The whole translation procedure is described in the wiki documentation of Claroline here.

In a nutshell, most of the translation job consists in editing a text file where the sentences to be translated are stored, taking the English language file as the reference file. To edit a Claroline language text file in an easy way, the following tools (which were recently set up by the Claroline user community) are available :

PhpLangEditor is a Mozilla/Firefox browser extension: the tool requires one of these browsers but may be used on any operating system where Mozilla or Firefox can be installed.

Here are some additional tips for translating Claroline with this tool :

• Use the English complete.lang file as the Source file.
• There are different ways to use the Translation file feature :
  • Use it to open another complete.lang file in order to prefill the translation form to help you in your work.
  • Use it to open an existing translation file to be completed (after opening the same file as a source file).
  • Or ... do not use it as opening a translation file is an optional feature.

Text editors

You can use a programmer's editor such as :

• All platforms : Eclipse, Scite, Emacs, Vim,...
• Windows : Notepad++,...
• Linux : Gedit, Kate,...
• Mac OS X : Smultron, Xcode,...

Whatever your choice is the choosen text editor must be able to manage the charset of the translated language.

  Warning : Microsoft Word is a word processor not a text editor.
  Whatever its powerful formatting features, it is not fit 
  for managing the file format used with Claroline.
  

  Microsoft Notepad is not a programmer's editor and cannot handle different charsets.
